Plastic. It’s travelled every road in our country—in commercial products on their way to store shelves, as waste heading to landfills, and everywhere in between as part of our day-to-day lives.
Although Canada is continuing its efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle plastic, there’s still so much more we can do to limit our consumption, and conserve and protect our environment. That’s why this year, Statistics Canada is joining Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Canadians from coast to coast to coast in marking this year’s theme for Canadian Environment Week, #BeatPlasticPollution, and asking:
What are you doing to help reduce plastic waste?
Environmental, ecological and energy data: We’ve got you covered
As Canada’s national statistical agency, we provide Canadians with valuable data and insights on our environment and ecosystems, particularly through our new Census of Environment (CoE) program. Co-sponsored by ECCC, the CoE is providing foundational data on Canada’s ecosystems to help monitor environmental trends and enable evidence-based decision-making to address the impacts of climate change.
Our goal? To link ecosystem data with socio-economic information to tell stories about the connections between ecosystems, human well-being and the economy.
How we’re celebrating #EnviroWeek 2023
To celebrate #EnviroWeek and key Days of Note, we are releasing a series of articles on environment and energy-related topics from June 5-9.
Don’t forget to check out these portals, which provide single-window access to environment, climate change and energy statistics in Canada.

StatCan’s efforts to build a Census of Environment (CoE) places it among the first national statistical agencies in the world to develop an ongoing and comprehensive program of ecosystem accounting. These efforts highlight our commitment to measuring sustainable economic growth and the impacts of climate change for a better future.
As the CoE develops over time, Canadians will have the valuable information they need to better protect, rehabilitate, enhance and sustain our country’s natural environment.
