Farm product prices, October 2021

Prices received by farmers in October for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

Across all provinces, slaughter hog prices declined for a second consecutive month, as weakening export demand continues to put pressure on prices. Price decreases ranged from 11.1% in New Brunswick to 6.1% in Ontario.

Both slaughter cattle and feeder cattle prices declined across all provinces in October. These prices have been under pressure due to the increased culling engendered by the dry conditions in the west and the high feed cost.

Following the monthly decline in September, canola prices rebounded in the west this October. Compared with September, prices increased from 1.0% in Alberta to 11.1% in Manitoba. Flaxseed price continued its upward trend in October, which began in June 2021. Oilseed prices have been buoyed by tightening supplies.

Meanwhile, non-durum wheat, dry peas, and lentil price movements were mixed across provinces in October.
