Energy statistics, September 2021

December 20, 2021, 8:31 a.m. (EST)

Following an 11.8% increase in August, primary energy production rose another 11.0% year over year in September, the seventh consecutive monthly year-over-year increase. This was mainly attributable to lower levels of energy production during the second wave of the pandemic in September 2020. Crude oil (+10.1%) and natural gas (+11.0%) accounted for most of the growth in primary energy production. In contrast, secondary energy production edged down 0.7% year over year, mostly on lower refinery and secondary electricity production. Overall, energy production increased in five of the nine commodity groups in September.

Total energy exports were up 10.7% year over year in September, largely on the basis of higher volumes of crude oil and natural gas exported to the United States. Total energy imports rose 5.6% year over year, with crude oil, natural gas and refined petroleum products accounting for the majority of imported energy products.
