Growth slows in the specialized design services industry in 2023
Following two consecutive years of double-digit growth, operating revenues in the specialized design services industry rose 3.6% to $4.5 billion in 2023.
Specialized design services include interior, industrial, graphic and other specialized design services. Interior design services continued to be the largest industry in 2023, accounting for 46.3% of sales, followed by graphic design services (27.2%).
At the provincial level, Ontario accounted for just over half (50.9%) of the operating revenues in specialized design services, at $2.3 billion in 2023, up 3.6% compared with 2022. Quebec (19.6%), British Columbia (17.2%) and Alberta (8.5%) were the next largest contributors, with a combined share of 45.3%. Revenues were up in every province in 2023, except in Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.
